World Skiing Invitational | AFP World Championship
Slopestyle, Superpipe, and Big Air
(start list and results are posted at the bottom of the page)
TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival presents the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) World Championship featuring the invitational Slopestyle, the invitational Big Air and the open Superpipe.
Superpipe
Competitors in the Olympic-sized Superpipe will aim high and throw-down in the most impressive display of on-mountain athleticism. Combining passion, prowess, positivity and pure attitude, the Superpipe lays it on the line for committed and confident skiers to take home a huge prize purse and priceless bragging rights. - Located at Blackcomb Pipe
Slopestyle
Slopestyle is a hugely integrated and technically challenging discipline, featuring jumps, rails, and features to challenge and intimidate even the best skiers in the world. With slopestyle skiing now included in the Winter Olympic Games, expect to see slope royalty come out to play. The slopestyle for the WSI will be taking place in the Highest Level Park on Blackcomb. The line drops from above the gated entrance and uses the entire right side with a combo of huge jumps and mind-blowing features. The HL left jumps will be open to public throughout the week with the exception of April 21st when the Slopestyle event is on. On that day the left line will be open for spectators viewing the event and access will be via the top of the HL but no pass will be required.
Big Air
The Big Air jump, located at the base of Whistler Mountain, is the ultimate in ski-voyeurism. Not for the faint of heart, this jump will shock, amaze and intimidate, and that’s just the spectators! Immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of Skier’s Plaza, and watch the mind-boggling aerial talents of the who’s who of the ski world throw down in one of the most impressive displays of raw talent and gutsy trick-wrangling in an attempt to walk away with the coveted title of Big Air Champion, a brand new Chevrolet Cruze courtesy of sponsor Chevrolet and endless bragging rights.

trying to get media access, can't find where to apply
Hi Jay, media can apply in the media section (bottom of the page, under the sponsors logos). The link for the accreditation page is www.wssf.com/media-accreditation
Very excited to see this is going on while I am up there - just changed my itinerary so I can check this out! We are staing at the base of blackcomb...How are we able to check out these events if we are not skiing - is that possible? Or do we gotta get onto the mountain.
Carmie, you are able to attend any of the music and arts events as they are in the village (a 5 minute walk from the base of Blackcomb), and the Big Air competitions will be held in the village also. The only ones that require a lift pass and ski access are Snowboarding Moguls and Boarderstyle, and Skiing Pipe and Slopestyle.
You can purchase lift tickets at www.whistlerblackcomb.com
Last year instructors and employees from other ski areas got a break on tickets during the festival--it was a big reason why I came--is that happening again this year?
We will certainly be in discussion with Whistler Blackcomb about this again. Stay tuned!
Live streaming is very difficult, expensive and hard to orchestrate for events that are held in the alpine, like Pipe and Slope. Some resorts have their events right down in the valley, and that is why they can live stream. we will be web-casting the Big Air on Saturday live, as that is held in the Valley for us.
Alex Schlopy was invited but he elected to attend the conflicting Jon Olsson event instead.
Results are posted under 'Slopestyle Finals_Results' in pdf above
To our knowledge there will not be live streaming. But many broadcaster will be filming and releasing footage online after the event.
I want to head up and watch the slope style finals. Do I need an HL park pass to get in? Will the course be fully fenced off so I know how close I can get or is it fair game?
Thanks
I was wondering where the competitions are going to take place. I know the big air is viewable from the base, but is the slopestyle? and will I be able to ride up the gondola and watch if I can't ski (torn MCL and meniscus)
Hi, the skiing and snowboarding events are on Blackcomb, accessible by gondola and chairlift and will be at the Pipe, the GMC Race Centre, Boarder-Cross course and near Glacier Creek Lodge for the Moguls and Slush Cup. You, can, however, watch tonight's Grand Opening and next week's Big Air from the valley, at Skier's Plaza.
hi i was wondering how to get into slope and big air
because i thought it was just for pros but i know two people that got in jaeden and noah, but i think they did some comps this year but not x games or anything, so i was wondering how i could maybe get in next season , can you email me @
Hey Salman,
The event held some wildcard spots that we used to support some up and comers and athletes that have supported us over the years but didn't make the AFP list for various reasons (some due to injury).
To be considered in the future you can hit up ngrether@ watermarkinc.ca
Nathalie is our athlete manager and she'll be able to shed some detailed light on the process. Glad you're interested in the WSI and hope to see you out there competing in the future.
I think it would be a shame not to invite Tom Wallisch seeing as he was voted as skier of the year by freeskier magazine
We agree! We've invited him, but have not recieved confirmation that he will be attending.
We're hoping like you!
Have just received confirmation that Tom Wallisch will be competing at WSI.
Awesome news!
this isn't the first slopestyle ever...first one was in 2001
You're right! I stand corrected, we ran the "Atomic Slopestyle" in 2001. Thanks for the catch. I thought we had only done the snowboard Slopestyle.
How many competitors are invited to the slopestyle, men and women, as this is an invitational event do you have the top 10 or so from the year end cululated results after the Europe X Games ?
Thanx
Hey Drew, there's been a recent update to the invitation criteria - the winner the men's slopestyle at the Canadian Championships (Mount St Louis / Moonstone - March 4-7) will be receive a wildcard spot in the WSI Slopestyle.
Hi Drew,
thanks for the comment, full details can be found at: http://www.wssf.com/world-skiing-invitational-athletes
Hi!
How does the AFP create consistency in judging? There is no information on the AFP site about that.
Ania, the information of the AFP website states that:
The AFP World Ranking is created with the results from all competitions listed on the AFP Event Calendar. A competitors top 5 results in each discipline generate the competitors point score. The Overall Ranking takes a competitors top 2 results in each discipline, HalfPipe, SlopeStyle & BigAir, which cumulatively creates the competitors score for Overall.
what is the AFP?
Hi Sinbad - Thanks for the catch - we'll make sure we change the copy to reflect that AFP is the "Association of FreeSkiing Professionals," it's a relatively new body that was created to give to Athletes a voice in events, to create some consistency in Judging and generally be a proponent of progressing FreeSkiing.
They create a world ranking system based on results from competitions.
