We came in the spring to the festival and it was great. Went skiing, checked out the shows and ha d a good time. We stayed here http://www.whistlerdream.com/ and it was right on the slopes :) We are going back for another year during 2010 to checkout the festival and hit the slopes.
yeah orage masters last year was awesome as was this year. big air no biggie there...
super pipe ski is one to check out for sure, hope its not raining
Not having big air is a big bummer.
Was just wondering if you have a list of the invited skiers for the super pipe?
Also people get over the fact of no big air, its not as though your paid for tickets, its all freeeeeee.
Check out the Orage masters instead, that was the highlight for me of last years festival
I just checked the schedule to see that there is NO BIG AIR this year?!?!?!?! The Big Air is what MAKES the WSSF and I look forward to it it every single year. I even bring people who don't ski or snowboard from Seattle up to watch because it is a big event that they can take part in. I am so disappointed. I hope it returns next year and is never left out again.
No Big air?! I guess a festival can't be good forever. I can watch people in the Black park any sunny day doing slopes style run of the mill (nowadays) stuff. The big air is what was always a step from the ordinary to the amazing.
Plus the bands are all way smaller than past years. Festival is gay now and I hope the organizers lose tonnes of money so that maybe it won't be gay next year.
For the past 4 years, I've booked a 3 day 15 person trip during the "BIG AIR" weekend at WSSF: it's the one time of year I can bring friends who don't ski up to Whistler to witness what we do on the hill. You can make the half-pipe prize a million dollars...but no one is gonna see it unless you make it accessible to all. The final is on a Tuesday...really?
Hi Sue

so might be a silly question, but can we be spectators for the qualifying runs for the super pipe on Monday? and how do we find out where it is to watch it?
There are no marquee weekend events?!
Skiiers big air has been a consellation in recent years as snowboarding content has been super weak. Didn't it occur to the organizers to drop the superpipe for the big air instead of vice versa?
The tricks you see in the big air are more often than not the same tricks you saw last year . This year with the grenade games finale and orage masters in skiers plaza, the course will consist of multiple jumps and features . The Orage Masters will see teams of three men and one women attack the course simultaneously , hoping to win the lucrative white blazer.
Just another reason to get your lazy ass up the mounatin!!! Instead of chilling in the village get up the hill , come watch us skiers kill it in the pipe !! we've been asking for a 22 ft pipe for a few years now and thanks to everyone we finally got it!! Im sure everyone will send it . So come check it out , you wont be disappointed !! Also it should be noted that the Orage Masters should not be missed either, its not like anything you've seen before!!
i think its clinically insane that you would pull what most consider to be the premiere event and biggest attraction of the festival - the big air - to 'shake things up'. i don't get it. that's like the olympics dropping the men's downhill. epic fail on someones part.
I'm not sure about the clinical part, but yes there is a measure of insanity in this job.
Ultimately it was my call.
I`ve been going to the WSSF now for about 10 years, I`m so disappointed to hear that there is no big air as this was by far the best highlight of the festival. I remember when there wasn`t a big air 3-4 years ago and it really changed the face of the event, soooooo many people weren`t as excited without it. I was hoping that wouldn`t happen again, now it has. Not a good change in my opinion.
Thanks for respectfully sharing your opinion - many factors went into the decision this year and it wasn't an easy one to make - but we've heard your and others opinions and it's slated to be back 2011.
BTW - I agree that when we didn't have the Big Air or anything on snow in skiers plaza in 2005 it left a hole in the program - that year the decision was made due to the lack of snow in the valley.
This year we're still hosting two big events on snow in Skier's Plaza - on the first Saturday it'll be the Orage Masters noon to 5pm, and the second Saturday night will feature Monster Grand Finale, which will feature some great snowboarding action.
The first Saturday night will feature a show, one that shouldn't be missed!
Again - thanks for sharing your thoughts, we take them all into account as we make decisions in the future.
No big air??????? You say its becuz there was a big air scene in february. did it occur to whoever made that decision that nobody could get to whistler in february?????????????? something ain't right.
The Big Air in February was only one factor in the decision making process - I've cut and pasted an earlier response of mine:
It was a tough decision but based on a number of factors - it'll be back in 2011 - just shaking things up for this year with "Whistler Live" creating a "Big Air scene" for over 20 nights in the months leading up to the event, we thought it might be good to take the opportunity to do things a little differently. It's also allowed us to significantly increase prize money in the Pipe Comp, which we're stoked about.
Do us a favour and be sure you check out the scene in skier's plaza this year on the first Saturday before you finish passing judgement.
It was a tough call that we had to make prior to seeing the Whistler Live version of the Big Air - and only reading the hype about it prior.
There is every intention on having the Big Air return in 2011.
tell the mountain that its great that they decided to open both mountains for the fest, but I chose NOT to fly in for the fest when I heard only one was open. now i'm PISSED to hear they opened up both mountains because I'm already spent my money on plan b. what a waste of time.open, close, open, tell them they just pissed off at least two people. I've given up on this festival. ain't like it used to be.
We're sorry to hear that - the festival doesn't have a say when it comes to the operating dates of the mountain - when we heard that one was closing we were as disappointed as you - but we're equally pleased to have a partner who responded to festival attendee feedback and has made some changes to thier schedules to accomodate their guests and ours.
Hope you'll reconsider and we'll see you next year!
PRIZE ADDITION:
THE WINNER OF THE MENS AND WOMENS SUPERPIPE WILL HAVE A ONE IN FOUR CHANCE TO DRIVE AWAY IN A BRAND NEW 2010 CHEVROLET CAMARO
In response to Whistler Live hosting a Big Air Scene for over 20 nights in Feb - we decided to put our resources into producing a stellar Superpipe competition. The big air is slated to return in 2011.
no big air?
will you guys demo line skis this year for instance the ep pro shorty?
Checking Jl - we'll get back to you on that.
Hey JL - we have an update regarding the participating brands at the Demo Park. Line Skis is not signed up. Currently, the following brands are registered: Atomic, Salomon, Head, Nordica, Prior and Rossignol. Check back at http://www.wssf.com/event/demo-park for updates.
Tell me this is a joke that Whsitler is closing on April 18th. That is insane. This has NEVER happened in the past. Near record snow year, Olympic Year. No Whsitler? There needs to be a petition. Not enough people coming out are aware of this.
I wish it were - unfortunately the festival doesn't make those decisions - we suggest you send an email to Whistler Blackcomb.
Announcement tomorrow on how the biggest WSI pipe prize pool has the potential to be bigger.
Alright - we just added $5000 more in prizing to the women's pot and we're actively seeking a partner to throw down some more cash. Top women in the world have already signed up for the pipe, so we want to give them something worthy of their efforts.
Could be another sweet surprise as an add to this and the guys pot as well.
Stay tuned.....
And get ready for an epic Pipe
Why are the cash prizes SOOOOOOOOOOOO much less for the women's events!?
cp
Hey CP,
Thanks for the comment - and you're right - we should do better. We were pretty excited to offer the women $7500 for first this year, which is the most we've ever been able to offer - and probalby took some bad advice about the size of the split, which was partially based on field size -we are intending on beefing up the prize pool with additional non-cash prizes.
Some of the top women skiers have been loyal to the event over the years - which is why we tripled the money from last year for them.
Stay tuned - we're going to work on this....
honestly, how many times are you going to change this schedule, slopestyle was in, now its out?
Slopestyle wasn't posted as part of the schedule - except the Orage Masters. There is a slopestyle on Sunday - part of the WB park riders series. We're going to list some info on this site to point people in the right direction, but didn't want to mislead anyone into thinking it's a WSI event. Sorry for the confusion.
so whens the slopestyle? and where do we sign up?
Isn't whistler closed on the 18th? Some kinda joke?
Whistler Mountain is closing on Monday April 18th - but Blackcomb will still be open.
Ok, well I guess I'll see ya next year. Have a good time
Sorry man - count on it being back for 2011 and in a bigger way.
why did you take out the big air?
It was a tough decision but based on a number of factors - it'll be back in 2011 - just shaking things up for this year with "Whistler Live" creating a "Big Air scene" for over 20 nights in the months leading up to the event, we thought it might be good to take the opportunity to do things a little differently. It's also allowed us to significantly increase prize money in the Pipe Comp, which we're stoked about.
You did that last year too, where's the big air?
Is there slopestyle?
There are two slopestyle competitions - one will be the Orage Masters which is via invite. The second is going to be an open slopestyle - grassroots. Orage is on Saturday at the base of the hill. The open slopestyle will be in the park - stay tuned for more info.
There isn't a traditional Big Air comp this year. We've brought the Orage Masters Competition to the base of the Mountain this year to change things up.
Where is the Big Air registration????
Is there a Big Air Comp??
Is there a big air at the Whistler base in the village this year as there has been previous years?
is there a big air?
when is registration opening
