The craft of action sport photography requires constant devotion and unfailing passion. As the pre-eminent action sports photography contest in the world, the Pro Photographer Showdown is an unparalleled celebration of still images and of the commitment shown to build a body of work that captures time and captivates the human spirit. In tribute to the masters of their field, we invite action sports and lifestyle photographers from around the world to submit their work for an opportunity to earn a trip to Whistler BC, during the 2010 TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival to showcase their work for an audience of sports enthusiasts, media and industry professionals….and to win the $10,000 cash prize for Best in Show. In addition, all five runners up will receive $1,500 cash as an appearance fee.
In recognition of the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s 15th Anniversary we are changing the game for 2010’s event to honor the past and future manifestations of the Pro Photographer Showdown.
Originating in 1998 with a slide show and live storytelling by Eric Berger and Pro Photo Showdown commissioner, Jack Turner, the event initially comprised the invitation-only Pro Photographer Showdown and the open-call Pro Photographer Search, from which a wild-card entry would move through to the final Showdown. The field continued to grow, and eventually, the Search was replaced by a world wide call for submissions for entry into the Pro Photographer Showdown, with five photographers selected based on their submitted slideshows to compete in Whistler.
For 2010, the historic Search and Showdown elements will be combined, an added spot is being made available, and a People's Choice being added. $18,500 in cash prizes have been allocated, cementing the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival's Pro Photographer Showdown as the preeminent action sports photography event in the world.
The world wide submission call will award spots to 3 photographers and a panel of esteemed judges will invite 3 photographers to present 9 minute slideshows of their life’s work.
New in 2010! – People’s Choice Award –This year we are giving the over 1800 spectators at the Pro Photo Showdown their vote! In 2010 we will be awarding an extra $1,000 to the photographer who wins the hearts and votes of guests attending the event in our first ever People’s Choice Award.
