WSSF 2013.. Let's Do This.
We made it through the predicted Apocalypse and into 2013. Retrospectively, 2012 was a year of ups and downs, wins and losses, a lot like most years that have passed. We learnt a lot, gave a lot, and are charging forward into the new year with zeal like never before.
In 2012: We said goodbye to Freeskiing's Queen, Sarah Burke, who remains forever in our hearts. We also said goodbye to our title sponsor TELUS, who after 13 years is moving in a different direction. Gus Kenworthy and Devin Logan were named the AFP World Tour World Champions at WSI. We worked with Monster Energy to make The Shred Show's Slopestyle and Big Hip competitions part of the 5-star lineup in the TTR World Tour. JUNO Award winning and international musicians played for free to amped crowds of up to 10,000 people every day. We raised $6000 for awesome charity Playground Builders, and countless dollars for our other charity partners. We had a record number of sold out events such as the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown and the 72hr Filmmaker Showdown. We had one naked skier, Walter Wood, pulling a delightful and slightly inappropriate spread-eagle in the SuperPipe. There was over 10 hours of live streaming on YouTube of Michael Franti and Friends, Monster Energy's The Hip competition and The Sheepdogs concert. Sarah Burke was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame, solidifying her impact on not only skiers, but sports-people alike.
With every year that passes we will have trials and tribulations. Nothing in this life was meant to be easy and fair, but human nature is to fight, to persevere and to push forward. The WSSF aims to be an embodiment of that sentiment. With every setback, every loss, there's a reason to keep going, to fight for the successes, the good times, the community and the for the passion of it. We support the artists and the athletes, the passion and the prowess, the community of festival-goers, sponsors and excited participants. We do it for the love of the game, the music, the sport and the art. So, for the next few months, and especially during April 12-21, join us in cheering on 2013; let's make this the best festival ever, and come what may!
